Asus Eee Note EA-800 - Some Questions

Lighting Conditions and the Eee Note:
You need good lighting conditions. There's also a bit of glare going on because of the top layer which is glass and has an anti glare film. If you have a Kindle and compare it you will notice a big difference.

The glass removed from the Eee Note

Everyday performance of the Eee Note EA-800?
I use the system for personal notes and reading books. I think it's more of a personal device than a 'business' device.  When you need to do things urgently the Eee Note could do it... if you prepare it for the task.  For most situations the pen/paper will be faster.

How does the Eee Note perform in cold environments?
It performs well in cold environments. According to the manuals the operating temperature are between 5 Celsius (41 Fahrenheit) and 35 Celsius (95 Fahrenheit).
Manual at http://dlcdnet.asus.com/pub/ASUS/EeeNote/Eee_Note_User_Manual_EU.pdf

How does it perform waiting for the bus?
I have my own car... but if I was a passenger the system will do fine for reading books. It won't be a good system for writing notes in a very shaky bus or train.

What about taking notes when getting a phone call?
You need a third hand... or a table to place the Eee Note.

Is the Eee Note usable as a pen/paper device?
For the most part yes. I hate paper... so I like the Eee Note. Obviously you cannot get rid of all paper in this world (at least not yet, but we are moving towards a paperless world).

Asus Eee Note EA-800 - Wacom Tablet Input

A little bonus about this system is that you can use this system as a Wacom Tablet. The video has the details.

(if you need to download the drivers go to http://www.wacom.com/downloads/drivers.php and get the Tablet PC drivers)

How to turn your Eee Note into Wacom Input Tablet:
  • Plugin your Eee Note via the included USB cable
  • On your Eee Note's Menu make sure to pick "Windows PC Digitzer Mode"
  • Let the system install the drivers (it should take a few seconds)
  • On your Eee Note choose either left hand side or right hand side configuration
  • Enjoy having a neat Wacom Tablet Input

This is a nice bonus about the Eee Note, but it's not going to replace any of the more "dedicated" Wacom Systems or in my case the Lenovo X201 Tablet.

If you have a stylus/digitizer with more buttons you will also get the extra features.  More info:

Asus Eee Note EA-800 - Micro SD Card

The Eee Note comes with 4GB of internal memory.  If you need more storage you will need a Micro SD card.  There are several uses for the Micro SD card, which I have listed below.

Uses of Micro SD Card:
  • Sync Files (I use it for my music collection and podcasts)
  • Turn your Eee Note into English (If my method fails)
  • Add and test Apps

Turn your Eee Note to English - Method 2

If my other method fails, and you want English on your Eee Note follow these simple steps.

Steps:
  1. Download the file http://www.peterbarrette.com/EeeNote/FullInstall.zip
  2. Unzip the contents of the zip file into the Micro SD card
  3. Restart your Eee Note

Enjoy!

Asus Eee Note EA-800 - Web Browser

Do not buy the Eee Note if your plan on using for web browsing. The system is not that fast, the antenna isn't great either.

It's a nice little extra, but the main things features of this system are note taking and eBook reading ePubs or PDFs.

Speed up your computer with Tune-Up Utilities 2011

I like this software a lot.  There's tons of software that claim that they will speed up your computer, and most of them are bad liars or do a poor job.  Tune-Up is actually pretty good software.

Brain Games - Joshua Foer: Secrets of a Mind-Gamer

I constantly seek improvement and the brain is where it all begins.  Naturally this should be the first element to be improved.  Everything else is secondary.  One guy that has improved his memory drastically is Joshua Foer, what's cool about him is that he has released several articles about memory and will release a book called Moonwalking with Einstein: The Art and Science of Remembering Everything.

One of the latest articles from Joshua Foer was featured in The New York Times.  The article is long... so I decided to read all of it and outline what I thought was important.  Checkout my bits, and if you want more detail I strongly encourage you to check the full article.

What I believe are the important bits from The New York Times Article - Secrets of a Mind-Gamer

  • "What you have to understand is that even average memories are remarkably powerful if used properly"
  • "Photographic memory is a detestable myth. doesn't exist. In fact, my memory is quite average. All of us here have average memories."
  • Only through memorizing can ideas be incorporated into your psyche and their values absorbed.
  • Learn to think in more memorable ways
  • Mental athletes were relying more heavily on regions known to be involved in spatial memory (wiki - part of memory responsible to recording information about one's environmens and its spatial orientation (ie navigating around a familiar place)
  • Simonides of Ceos - Memory palaces (familiar place where you can put objects, which later can be recalled by navigating through them)
  • Latin rhetoric textbook called "Rhetorica ad herennium"
  • The goal of training your memory is not to become a "living book" but rather a "living concordance" (wiki - concordance means a "list of principal words used in a book or body of work")
  • "If something is going to be made memorable, it has to be dwelled upon, repeated."
  • Don't value quantity of reading over quality of reading.
  • Mnemonitsts empty their palaces after competitionts.
  • "Our brains don't remember every type of information equally well"
  • "Take the kinds of memories our brains aren't that good at holding onto and transform them into the kinds of memories our brains were built for"  (usually exaggerated images)
  • Great mnemonist have the ability to create "lavish images on the fly" (create something that is memorable and do it quickly)
  • Memory palaces don't have to be actual buildings, they can be things that are familiar.
  • Learning phases: learning, we associate things and make fewer mistakes, then we automate (aka OK Plateu.  We begin to focus on more important things)
  • To continue learning or improving we must break the O.K. plateu by "pushing ourselves beyond where we think our limits lie and then pay attention to how and why we fail"
  • "You have to analyze what you're doing."
  • Shut out distractions (audible and visual)
  • Bruce Lee: "There are no limits.  Thhere are plateaus, and you must not stay there; you must go beyond them.  If it kills you, it kills you."

Warpia SWP220 Giveaway (+Fund Raising for Cheeseburger)

If you have been interested in getting the Warpia SWP220 which is also known as the "Easy Dock Pro" this might be a chance to get it for zero dollars or with a donation increase your chances.  I'm giving this away because I don't use it that often and I don't want to put it up on eBay.

The Rules:
  1. Must be live in the USA (International shipping costs are insane)
  2. 18+ years old or if you are a minor have permission from parents/guardians
  3. Write a comment about the system (laptop, tablet, cell phone, etc) or software that you want more information about and why.  (this helps me figure out what I might do next)   Adding a comment gets you 1 entry.
  4. Increase your chances with donations which buy you additional entries (examples below)
    1. Example $1 = 2 additional entries + comment = 3 entries total
    2. Example $2 = 4 additional entries
    3. Example $3 = 8 additional entries
    4. Example $5 = 32 additional entries
  5. Winner will be chosen at random
  6. Have an email addresss (ie "john at gmail (dot) com") so I can contact you and get your shipping address.
  7. Entries close March 14th and winner will be picked March 15th, 2011

Donations will be used to pay for shipping expenses, if there's enough dollars I'll buy myself a cheeseburger.  Thanks for participating.

Asus Eee Note EA-800 - Reader Application

The reader application can read many file formats, but I mostly use PDF and ePub which has many benefits.  Text looks really good on the Eee Note so it's one of the big strengths.  I'm glad I can my purchased ePubs to the system (big +)

A few notes:
  • You can search by book title and tags
  • View books by tags
  • List of books includes a thumbnail preview + PDF or ePub, author name, tags, date and time.
  • You can lock your books (so no one else can have access to them), rename or delete them.
  • ePubs resize to fit the screen and allows font size change (better than PDFs)

Go To options
  • Tablet of Contents - Modern ePubs have excellent tablet of contents
  • Annotation Lists - Annotations are text notes written with the virtual keyboard
  • Bookmark Lists - You can bookmark as many pages as you want
  • Remark Lists - If you have highlighted or underlined text then a list of those pages will be created.
  • Page Percentage - You can move around your books by percentage

Two Snapshot Buttons:
  • Top Snapshot takes a screenshot of the text + your Remarks (highlights, underlines, etc) - Saves in .png
  • Bottom Snapshot takes a screenshot of your entire Eee Note's screen - Saves in .gif

Note on Snapshots:
Some ePubs (usually the ones you buy) limit your ability to take a "Top Snapshot", so you must resort the to the Bottom snapshot.  Samples below.

Image from ePub using the Top Snapshot Button

Image from PDF using the Top Snapshot Button

Snapshot taken with the Bottom Snapshot Button

You can now transfer the snapshots to your computer and view them or print to paper (if you need to).  Enjoy!

Asus Eee Note EA-800 - Passwords

I was recently asked about password protecting files with the Eee Note and yes you can do it. Like I mentioned in the video some files are personal. The default settings allow anyone to view all notebooks and ebooks.

The two levels of password protection:
  1. Allows you to add a password to lock files
  2. Allows the 1st and the same password to be typed at "wake up"

How to add a password to the Eee Note?
  • Go to Settings, then go to Security (6th item down)
  • Type your password and click OK
If you want the password at wake up then make sure you check the box "Require password when wakeup".  The password is the same for both levels of passwords.

I like using the 1st level because I don't like locking my entire system up every time the system goes to sleep.  It reminds me of the unlock button in the iPhone or the passwords in Windows, a waste of time.

Once you have set your password you can lock your notebooks and ebooks.  (top left icon is the lock)

Linked - HubPages Links to S10-3T Blog (grabs a few videos too!)

One of the latest websites that linked to the S10-3T blog is HubPages.  HubPages "Helps Everyday Experts Publish and Earn".  So... it's a web page/content mining site with above average quality.

I got mentioned a few times through the article's pages.
Once you get your S10-3t, I urge you to visit the site of Jesse B Anderson, who's like the holy man on the mountaintop when it comes to the S10-3t. I've included a lot of his instructional videos here. Some of his stuff is very simple, some is a bit technical.

After so much tinkering, I tend to mix up which ideas might have been mine. A lot of them came from Jesse, some from other sources, and even a little bit of my own.

I don't earn a cent through HubPages (terrible right? ;-) )  Thanks to Crewman6 for putting the S10-3T page up, I'm sure it will help plenty of S10-3T owners improve their system. (one of the main reason I began the S10-3T blog ).  Enjoy!

Asus Eee Note EA-800 - Evernote Features and Some OCR

Why use Evernote?

Because it syncs to everything. Written notes from one device can be synced to all of your devices (cell phones, tablets, desktop computers, laptops, etc).  It's a program that just works.  Evernote is a great program that I have shown before on my Lenovo S10-3T.

How does Evernote works on your Eee Note?

Evernote on the Eee Note goes only one way... from your Eee Note to Evernote.  There is no two way synchronization.  When you send files to Evernote from your Eee Note the system sends the entire Notebook (all pages within are sent).

Set Evernote account settings on your Eee Note:
  • Settings - Cloud Service Accounts
  • Select "Evernote account" and then type your Account Name and Password
  • Click OK

Yes you will need your Wifi on for Evernote to work.  Notes are synced to "from

Optical Character Recognition (OCR)

If you want to turn your handwritten notes to text you might be disappointed.  On the video above I demonstrated Microsoft OneNote and Abby FineReader Pro 10 and both did a lousy job.  The best way to turn your handwritten notes into text is by typing them yourself.  (you could hire someone to type the notes for you ;-)  hahaha )

The Eee Note will do a fine job at handling your handwritten notes, but they are for your eyes only.  Maybe changing the background to "blank" will help the whole OCR process.  Obviously everyone has their own style of writing so character recognition is not going to be perfect.  The OCR programs above are top class, and my handwritten notes aren't terrible.

Asus Eee Note EA-800 - Calibration

How to calibrate the Asus Eee Note:
  • Click on Settings
  • Go to the 2nd Page and open Personalize Your Pen
  • Pick what you need to do:
    • - Reset to factory default.
    • - Pen personalization
  • Touch the crosshairs with your stylus (there should be 9 crosshairs)

Enjoy your newly calibrated Eee Note. If you don't like the new calibration you can reset it to the factory default, or re-run the calibration.

Cool Tech - Kyocera Echo (the dual screen smartphone)

Thanks to AndroidCentral

This is a pretty neat smart phone.  It reminds me a bit of the Toshiba Libretto, the Acer Iconia and the Nintendo 3DS.  I have been using a computer setup that reminds me of the dual screens.

My X201 Tablet and a 24 inch Gateway monitor (image from my Docking Station Tips Post)

I can totally see the dual screen stuff working great at this small size.  The Kyocera Echo has the "Simul-Task" mode which allows 2 apps running at the same time.  This will be the first dual screen Android phone.

Typing stuff shouldn't block your view!

Kyocera Echo Details:
  • Works on single screen or dual screen mode
  • 2 x 3.5 inch screens at 480 x 800 pixels
  • When unfolded you can use both screens as a single 960 x 800 display
  • 1 Ghz Qualcomm Snapdragon
  • Android 2.2
  • Run separate apps on each screen
  • 5 MP rear facing camera (can shoot 720p video)
  • Price is about $189
True multi-tasking with the Kyocera Echo.

Forums vs QA Systems

Forums

What I like:
  • Members can ask a question or show cool stuff
  • Members can answer or pitch in ideas

What I don't like:
  • Usually if the thread is a question, there may be no definitive solution or answer.
  • Comments and useless information between useful information.
  • Viewers seeking answers cannot easily find the answers.
  • Big time wasters by encouraging more postings.

Questions and Answers

Most of the time I detest forum based services.  I prefer Questions and Answer systems.

What I like:
  1. There's a clearly stated question
  2. There's an answer (or no answer)
  3. Searchable database that can be viewed by other people (eliminates repeated questions, time wasting)
  4. It can be managed by itself (users ask, users answer)

The problems:
  • Questions can be super stupid, wrongly phrased, and wrongly tagged
  • Answers may be right or wrong (the human factor)
  • Potential for Spam (fixed by registration and moderation)
  • Lack of questions or answers (depending on the topic it might have a lot of user activity, or no activity)

Asus Eee Note EA-800 - Adobe ID Problems

Some ePubs don't need Adobe ID, and some do.  Usually the ePubs that you buy will need to activate your mobile systems.

This could be phrased as:
  • I cannot open my .ePub books!
  • My Eee Note cannot activate Adobe ID!
  • ePubs not working with Eee Note
  • Adobe ID doesn't work with Eee Note

The way to fix the problem is to:
  • Get your Adobe ID online (http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/membership/)
  • Set your Eee Note's Date and Time Properly (under Settings in Eee Note)
  • Make sure your wifi settings are correct (under Settings in Eee Note)
  • Input your Adobe ID (Settings - Cloud service accounts - Adobe ID)

To Sync ePubs to Eee Note
To sync ePubs you will need EeeNoteSync (to sync files between PC and Eee Note) and have Adobe Digital Editions (this downloads the .ePub files).  When you download the .ePub files from places like Google Books and Kobo Books they will give you a file that is then opened with Adobe Digital Editions.  Digital Editions downloads the files to "C:\Users\[your user name]\Documents\My Digital Editions".  From EeeNoteSync you can now add your .ePubs. to your Eee Note.

Hope that helps!

Asus Eee Note EA-800 - PDF Reading Capabilities

PDFs has been a great format, but they are not the optimal for the Asus Eee Note.  ePubs are the optimal format.

The Eee Note can read PDF documents.  If the PDFs have the proper size then they work very well.  But... most PDFs have different sizes.  When PDFs are "similar" to the size of paper they might be too big for the Eee Note.  You will have to use zoom and panning tools to read them.

Example files:

Advantages of ePubs vs PDF:
  • ePubs resize their content to fit any screen size
  • ePubs can have an interactive Tablet of Contents with the Eee Note,  PDFs don't.

One Note - Password protected PDFs will NOT work with the Eee Note.  You must remove the password before syncing to Eee Note.   You will have to find a program to do that.

Converting .PDF to .ePub through programs sometimes messes them up.  Not even programs like Calibre ebook management do it perfectly.  Calibre cannot convert password protected PDFs either.

You can highlight, underline, and annotate on your Asus Eee Note.  I haven't figured out how to export the PDFs with the edits (highlight, underline, and annotations).

I hope this helps answer some of the questions that you might have.  If you have questions please add them to the comments.

SIIG USB Mini Multimedia Keyboard

This is the SIIG JK-US0312-S1 USB Mini Multimedia Keyboard.  It's one of those small keyboards that hopefully make my life a lot easier and a bit more efficient.  (Yes I'm typing this with the keyboard).

I have owned many keyboards over the years which include the Logitech DiNovo Edge, the MK700, and the MS BT Mobile Keyboard 6000.  The DiNovo Edge I sold, the MK700 got an "oh yeah!!" from sweet Mr. Kool Aid, and the MS Mobile Keyboard 6000 was not doing it for me.  And so I ordered a SIIG USB Mini Multimedia Keyboard and so far it's performing great.

Pros:
  • No keypad on the right side
  • It's small but still functional
  • I love the Ctrl key all the way to the edge
  • Way more responsive than wireless keyboards

Cons:
  • Feels a bit "cheap" (but it is only a $20 keyboard)
  • No palm rest
  • It could use more multimedia keys
  • I dislike wires

Within minutes from switching to the keyboard I have improved quite a bit.  70 wpm a few minutes after plugging it in.  I want to reach at least 80 wpm like I used to.

Asus Eee Note EA-800 - English Version

This is how you can change the language of your Eee Note from Mandarin to English. Since the video cannot show every detail I encourage you to check the text below.

Steps if you have not installed Asus EeeNoteSync App :
  • Connect the USB cable to the Eee Note and pick the first option
  • Open setup.exe and follow the installation steps
  • Once the software is installed disconnect the Eee Note
  • Reconnect the Eee Note and create a backup (if you want to conserve your files)
  • Update the firmware (I encourage it)
  • Restore your files

Steps if you have installed Asus EeeNoteSync App:
  • Create a backup with the EeeNoteSync app
  • Locate and open "sys.config" via notepad (usually the file is at "EeeNoteBackup\settings\sys.config")
  • Change "[language]default=tc" to "[language]default=en"
  • Format the partition - Go to Settings > 2nd page > 2nd to last option > first button on the left
  • Wait for the system to format, then push the "restart" button
  • Restore the backup from EeeNoteSync and restart the Eee Note one more time
  • Your system should be in English now, enjoy!

I hope this helps those enthusiast who could not wait for the European and American release and imported their Eee Note from Taiwan.

Note: Now I can view how many mistakes I made with the previous videos!!!   and I knew that game was Sudoku!

Some questions

The Eee Note is not switching to English!
Try updating to the latest firmware, there's a good possibility that earlier versions did not include English.

How to get two columns on the home page?
Do another restart of the Eee Note and you should get the two columns.
