Lenovo ThinkPad Yoga 12, X230T, and MS Surface Pro 3 - Screen Quality Comparisons

Gear: Lenovo ThinkPad Yoga 12, MS Surface Pro 3, Lenovo Thinkpad X230T.

The Lenovo ThinkPad Yoga 12 has a 1920x1080 resolution in a 12.5-inch screen, the Surface Pro 3 has a 2160 x 1440 resolution in a 12-inch screen, and the X230T has a 1366 x 768 resolution on a 12.5 inch screen.  Below are several images showing comparisons among these three systems.  I go over colors, reflections, and the amount of text you can see depending on the landscape or portrait mode.

The Surface Pro 3 has the most intense looking greens, followed by the Yoga 12, and in last place the X230T.  Do note that I removed the plastic protective layer I have had on the X230T for these pictures.

Orange colors are also very intense on the Surface Pro 3.  You may be able to notice that the X230T is a bit washed up, it could be because of age though.

On the above image the Yoga 12 and Surface Pro 3 are close, the X230T seems to make the flower more a bit more orange.

The Yoga 12 and Surface Pro 3 have differences on their white tones.  The Yoga 12 has a greenish/yellowish tint, and the Surface Pro 3 would be a bit more on the true white tone.

The Yoga 12 offers a screen that reduces a lot of reflection.  The Surface Pro 3 is a very glossy screen that will reflect everything that is behind.

Adjusting the captured light on the camera reveals more of the reflection on each screen.

When in portrait mode, on continuous page mode, they both do a good job.  However, the Surface Pro 3 is the better one for this case, because we can view more lines of text at one time.

If we resize the text so that it fits the width of the device then the Yoga 12 is the better system.  Notice how much more we could see on the bottom?  However, I have to say that the MS Pro 3 is a nicer system to hold when reading in portrait mode.

In landscape mode we can notice that the Yoga 12 offers less lines that can be viewed when in comparison to the Pro 3.  This is because of the aspect ratios, the Yoga 12 is a 16:9, while the Pro 3 is a 3:2.

Regarding web pages while in landscape mode we can see that the Yoga 12 offers a lot more space for both horizontal and vertical content.  However, the text on the Yoga 12 is quite small when in comparison to the Pro 3.

Do note that the layout of the blog has changed since I took these pictures, so the current version is not going to produce the same results on your system.

In portrait mode the Yoga 12 shows that it can reveal far more content than the Pro 3.  You can see this because the web page shows three images, whereas the Pro 2 only reveals the first one and the top portion of the second image.

If you were to try to have each system exactly side by side then you have to do a lot of adjustments.  The body of the X230T consumes a lot of space.

The Yoga 12 vs the X230T.  I always felt restricted when using the X230T, and you can definitely see that with the Yoga 12 we can see a lot more content.

When in portrait mode the Yoga 12 offers more both horizontally and vertically.  No contest on this one.

That's all for now.  Hopefully this post reveals some of the strengths and weaknesses of the mentioned systems.  Overall we can see that the X230T shows its age, the Surface Pro 3 has the brightest and most colorful screen, and the Yoga 12 is the most practical for work--we are not as distracted by reflections and we can see more content per glance.
