Samsung Series 7 Slate - SSD vs 7200RPM HDD Boot And Wake Times

Support the blog by purchasing a Samsung Series 7 Slate:

While it is no secret that Solid State Drives (SSDs) are faster than Hard Disk Drives (HDDs) Samsung did catch my attention when they advertised a 15 second boot up time for their Samsung Series 7 Slate (SS7S). I wanted to compare the 7200RPM HDD for my HP Pavilion DV6T Quad Edition laptop to the SS7S SSD.

The differences between the two devices is very noticeable. On my test the SS7S does boot up in 16 seconds while the 7200RPM boots up in about 42 seconds. A difference of 26 seconds. Of course each system has different things to load, but I don't have many programs launching at boot.

Now obviously you are not going to be shutting down the SS7S that often and instead use the Sleep/Wake modes. Using these modes in most modern systems takes a very short time, usually about 2 seconds.

Overall I'm very happy about the boot and sleep/wake modes. The improved timing is one of the things that we do notice and love about modern slate tablets.
