Lenovo ThinkPad X230 Tablet - Random Right, Left, Middle Clicks

Gear: Lenovo ThinkPad X230T, Convertible Tablets.

When your X230T gets older (about 14 months in my case), or if you are a little rough on your system, you will encounter problems. One of them is the random right, left, and middle clicks; sometimes the system also seems to hold down left click. If you encounter this problem you will want to pull the hair out of your head because it's a very annoying issue. Luckily there are ways to go around the problem, but first lets figure out what the problem is.

Based on my research, the culprit is the motherboard and the trackpoint/touchpad interface. The motherboard thinks that a click is occurring and therefore it send the message to the rest of the OS. It happens not only in X230T systems, this is a Lenovo ThinkPad wide issue.

Since you have this problem you can do the following:
  1. If you are under warranty return the X230T to Lenovo and request a motherboard replacement.
  2. If you are NOT under warranty you can return the X230T to Lenovo and pay for repairs.
  3. If you don't want to spend money, and need an urgent fix, disable the trackpoint/touchpad through the bios.  This means that you will have to use a mouse or the digitizer for all mouse input.
  4. You could attempt to replace the TrackPoint assembly, but this should only be done by experienced users as there is a risk in further damaging your system if done improperly.

I chose the third option because I need this system every day.  The video has the instructions on how to access the bios and change the settings.  Hopefully this helps!

By the way, this is NOT the same as "random screen clicks" which I observed in X201T systems.

  1. Hi Jesse. I have the same problem and am wondering if I should replace the keyboard (inc trackpoint) or motherboard. Any thoughts?
